Osiris: New Dawn - Improved Base Building, 3D Utility System, Power System, and More

We’re in the home stretch of getting Beta Update #5 to you all, and we’re really excited to see what you think! Since adding 3D Items, Throwing, Item Examine, and 3D Item Equip features to our completely rewritten Inventory System, we circled back to the Base Building. Our goal was to once and for all tackle the base building system to allow for ease of use without terrain slopes getting in the way.

A while back, in one of our experience builds, we added a dozer attachment to the Rover. This worked well, but requiring the dozer to lay the foundation is a progression problem. The Rover is a complex vehicle that requires a healthy base to build. But how can you build a large base if you need the Rover to do so? The progression became a classic “chariot-before-the-horse” scenario and we needed to find a solution.

As you can see in the video, the solution is crazy simple and works brilliantly. The ground automatically deforms when you build, allowing the perfect ground height around your structures! Now you can build a large base and not have to worry about running into hill! We then started having a lot of fun building and decided it was finally time to add new Hallways, so we added Six New Hallways! We also added the new Med Lab, a structure for all Biology and Medicine Crafting.

After Build - the ground is automatically lowered to be flush with the foundation of each structure. This works in  multiplayer  and has  no impact on performance !

Even wall building has been rewritten. No longer will you need to use the old, clunky carousel interface with the Repair Tool. Just build walls straight from the Structure Menu!

3D Interfaces on all Utilities.

Utilities have all been completely reworked and rewritten. Crafting is now done in a 3D interface and each Utility will be full of sounds, animations, and FX, in addition to greatly improved crafting functionality.

Power Distributor, your central hub for all your power.

The Power System has also been completed in this upcoming Beta, allowing for you to clearly see how much power you’re gathering and dispensing to your base. All the power is fully accurate; the Turbine outputs more power in windy conditions. Solar panels harvest peak power at noon and no power at night, completely based on their angle to the star. As you can see, we’re sciencing the heck out of this game!

There’s more we’ve been plowing forward on too, including Single Missions, Steam Friend Mission Invites, Satellite Dish functionality, and a complete Liquid Storage rewrite, but we’ll save further info on these systems when we release this Beta Update.

This should be our last post before releasing this update to you. From here we have a few more items to clean up, re add all the crafting recipes, add persistence to all the Structures and Utilities and finish Multiplayer for Mission Mode. Our best guess is we’re 2-3 weeks away from releasing this update, and we appreciate your patience as we finish Beta Update #5 and continue to move forward with finishing Osiris: New Dawn.
